Question about Weather Loaches

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had one of 7" but jumped.

I love them. I had one when I was a kid and he would eat out of my hands, sit on it,I loved him. He jumped out once or twice didnt think he would of made it but he pulled through. I ended up moving and giving my tank and fish to the people across the street. Ive been trying to look for one lately. All I've seen is the albino ones that the pet stores sell.

I just got one about 8"! I have never seen them at that size. Monster!

Weather loaches are a food fish in Japan too. They are huge and extremely cheap.... :) I saw some albino weather loaches recently too. I dont usually like albino fish but these ones were nice. Thats an airdriven box filter visible in the tank. They are flat - conical shaped and they are often buried in substrate so they become part undegravel filters too.

I also saw some unusual loaches. Are these horse face loaches or something else? ... I like them and might try growing and breeding some.

Breeding is very unlikely. As for proper identification, please watch out for updates on this thread.

I've posted your picture there to help properly identify your loach.

Thanks Lupin,
I see a few unusual fish species from time to time in Japan. These are fairly cheap so they cant be too rare. I think(?) I will be able to breed these guys since I have bred a few other loaches before. I sometimes dabble in hormones and have quite a few tanks, ponds, pools (in Australia) and often manufacture equipment to suit. Oxygenation towers, waterfall tanks, wave pools etc if that helps in the spawning process.

Let me know if we get an id.

Right. I got the ID from a Loaches Online moderator, Martin Thoene.:) It's a Cobitis striata. That's really a nice fish.

Fishdance, I'd recommend you join there and they will help you if ever you need more loach IDs.

Good luck.

Edit: Someone in Loaches Online forum is asking this. Do you own those Cobitis striata? I haven't read the word 'owned' other than 'saw'.:) It seems the members there are interested with your fish.;)

Wow nice fish ! never seen these for sale , where did these come from ?

I bought some which will end up in Australia by accident somehow. They are very striking with interesting faces :)

Thanks for the loach forum recommendation but I already spend too much time online. I do like loaches a lot though.
