I had tried to keep the Channa aurantimaculata 2 times before, but all failed...they end up by no eating and "wait" for the dead. They seen totally lost appetite, but i dunno why and what reasons.

The tank size is 4' x 1.5' x 1.5', ph is around 6-7. The water temp is 29-30 deg, but sometimes will be 31-32 deg because my place is in tropical (Malaysia). The first few day when i get them, they were quite active and accept any type of food included fishes and shrimps. But few days later they become fussy eater that just eat the insect type of foods (superworm, mealworm and crickets). Then few days later again they become inactive and just eat very less (1-3 days just eat 1 superworm/mealworm)...soon they started to refuse eating and just lay/hide somewhere in the tank until dead.

The period while they "waiting" dead was around few weeks to months, i had tried many ways to cure them but no result.

I think the water parameter should be no problem because other tankmates live very well...
Is the high water temp killed them? Or something of parasite?
Channa Experts please help, i need a details guide because i am planning to challange for keeping the Channa aurantimaculata again. Thanks.

i think these chana species are subtropical, sounds like ur temp is a lil high

I think its the water temp, i had the same problem with keeping bleheri. Btw, where did u get ur auranti?i saw one near zoo negara lfs. But not confident him/her cos it doesnt look that healthy.

Yup, i know this species are subtropical...
The best I can do so far to keep the water temp low are around 29-30deg (add cooling fans), it sounds i have to get a water cooler machine...

Well, my bleheris were had same problem too...and dead already (it also become less active, color faded away and lost appetite). My bleheris were get from the LFS that near the zoo negara (beside road).
My first auranti was get from LFS in Kepong, and second one was get from LFS in Jalan Pudu.

Everytimes i saw the auranti available at all the LFS near my place had looked not that healthy and not in good shape too.
It seen that those LFS didn't take care with those c.auranti because all mix them together and even didn't cover the tank....

So far got anyone success to keep this species in Malaysia with normal water temp? (without using the water cooling machine)

HI,m

its the temperature, very much too high.
The only two breedings in captivity of aurantimaculata (in Germany by M. Engemann) were after the fish had been removed from the outdoor pond, befor winter.
And winter gets cold in Germany.

Hi Bro,i m keeping my bleheri in quite a high temp of 28-30 Deg too and in the PH of 6.0 and sometime may drop abit to 5.8 but so far they are doing quite well and stable with very good appetite so i guess maybe u can check with the LFS u bought on the source of where your bleheri come from as i guess different source come under different water parimeter,Bros correct me if i m wrong and lastly most of my friend in singapore here who keep Bleheri also keep them at a high temp of 28-30 Deg and their fish are doing fine too so i guess its the source of where they come from and i find that another big problem which u guys mentioned is the condition of this channas when they are brought into your country and mostly u can see alot of Nice Channas but sad that they have some sort of either external or internal parasite which is due to the poor keeping of those LFS who wanna sell it and did not even do a qarantine part which i think is very important so i guess i can only said when it comes to buying channas,u have to try your luck too;)

Anyway Very nice info and photos, thank for sharing bro BRucki;)

Hi,

there is only one source of bleheri, they are not a widspread species like gachua.
They are endemic, like sp. Assam, auranti, etc.
So all bleheri come from the same water. Nevertheless, they can stand most types of water, but often get problems with too high temperatures.

also aurantis , its not that you cannot keep at high temps but the chances of infection due to lowering of imune system and stress is much much higher , and it seems that at theese higher temps they find it really hard to recover , they can stand higher temps for a fair period of time but tend to suffer if kept permantly at theese temps , there is allways the exception to the rule of course and some people do seem to have luck at higher temps ,but breeding is highly unlikey .

there is of course the fact that on top of that if there not in great condition when you buy them ,they may allready be doomed , i have seen ones in country that where for sale ,that looked like they would not make it , i would only ever buy a nice conditioned fish showing nice colour and finnage , quarentine at lfs is a must ,if they dont do it put a deposit down for a couple of weeks then before taking fish make sure your happy with condition

cheers col
