LTS - my wife's company has guaranteed bonuses. it was one of the things she negotiated when she took the job last year. in light of the economy, she recieved a letter asking her if she would waive the bonus in order to help deter lay-offs.

back ground info: she is a senior sales analyst, her company did 67% of the expected/goal. she has been with the company 14 months.

i know its an personal thing, so would you risk it? i mean if it comes time to lay-off, it is possible they flag you as "bonus-taken" .. right?

Years ago I took a voluntary 20% pay cut in exchange for some extra time off to keep my assistant from getting layed off.I ended up getting fired over a dispute when the owner decided not to pay our medical insurance anymore without letting me know.
If I was being asked to give my bonus back,Id start job hunting.

In your wifes case I would ask her if she thinks she's deserving of the bonus. If she is then I would take it. To be honest with you whether she takes it or not I don't think will judge what her future holds. In lay-off time they're gonna keep the people who perform.

i hear what your saying. but its not exactly a good economy out there.......... there are lay-offs left and right. so chances are all new hire-ees will take a pay cut.

i'm pretty sure the voluntary waivers are company wide.

Take the bonus, sabotage your coworkers projects, and try to sell company secrets to competitors.

take it, it might feel a little bit selfish but since companies is not people who generally would want to pay you back for a good deed they may very well "turn on you" when times get even tougher and you'll end up kicking yourself for not taking the bonus.. esp sales people.. it was part of the deal from the beginning so go for it!

not taking bonuses is'nt going to post pone lay-offs for very long, i say take it. is upper management taking theirs? it would suck to pass on it, and come jan. 1st people get laid off anyway.

Personally I would hope they flag those that would rather take a bonus and watch others get layed off.. In my opinion These should be the first to go.. Many people that do the grunt work and also have families usually go first.. This is LAME in my opinion..

That bonus which would cover her Christmas... Will likely put someone else on the street..... I think it would be greedy to continue to take the bonus. Especially knowing that others will be layed of likely due to taking the bonus..
