I'm just trying to help a client that wants to keep a 12 inch armatus with a 18 inch mbu puffer. I have absolute no experience with any puffers but I know that some species ( fahaka) are extremely aggressive. Is this a terrible idea or is there a chance the two fish are going to live together? They will be housed in 180. I usually see Mbu puffers housed alone. The dude said that he has kept 7 inch datnoids with the puffer with no problem. Is everything about puffers based on personality?

thanks

Depends on the fish. If he's had it with other fish, than it could work. I would advise him to start with a cheap silvery fish like a tinfoil barb to see how it fares and then go from there

Mbus are the one large FW puffer that has been able to be housed with tankmates. There are a few on here who house very large mbus with nice rays with no ill effects. But like any species its based on the temperment of the individual.
If I had an Mbu I would definitely try it but have a alternate/emergency plan in place if things go south.

thanks guys! Anymore input? Are Mbus the most aggressive kind of puffer?

but rays are bottom dwellers. How about mid to top swimming tankmates?

What's the difference between the temperment of mbus and fahakas. I heard in instances where a large fahaka sheared off the fins off of aros and gars.

I believe fahakas are more aggressive than mbu towards anything else in the tank. Mbus aren't always a terror, but I don't think they like any tank mates that would show any aggressive behavior. I think an armatus would stress the mbu out, and it might retaliate.

Personally i would never mix the two. Too many things can and probably will go wrong.

I'll put it this way: I wouldn't try it with my money.

IDK much about fahakas and puffers but at my LFS they had a 15+inch fahaka with atleast one florida gar and some other fish idk can't remember... it was priced around 200-250ish so it was probably fahaka but I was like ain't nobody got money for that so I kinda forgot about it. I do remember however it did have a really really long tail
