thanks milkman407 , you said you had two did you rehome them were did they end up going 6x4x2 is a very large tank too did they go somewere better ? man dont tell me im gonna have to eat them in a couple years lol

I had a tank melt down, I don't really recall what happened, I was in the hospital and when I came home my tank was infested with parasites. This was around 9 years ago. Haven't owned one since. But they are amazingly interesting fish to own, one day i'll get another.

I'm telling you, you can't get any time out of a 180g tank once they are near or at 24". I am basing this on trying to keep two 24-25" silvers in a 180g. It's not just the top that is and issue. Silvers can do much damage to themselves ramming into the sides or the bottom of the tank, let alone any décor you may want.

Seriously, if you can't provide your loved trio with at least the 8'x3' then you better plan on getting rid of them.

I had to let mine go do too a divorce, also let me restate. The 450g was not a suitable tank four the 4 of them at 31" plus.

thanks again B , your comments are considered and as i mentioned a pond could be a consideration down the road even a good size one that would be large enough. for now i will do the best i can for them thanks.

im actually foreseeing another problem that could be a deciding factor in just how long i can keep them in any given tank ...Nitrates !
i have been monitoring the ammonia , nitrites and nitrates and the nitrates are beginning to accumulate rather quickly . ( ammonia and nitrites stay at 0ppm ) .
seems that with the amount of food im feeding lol ( basically a limitless supply of crickets ,super worms , pellets and minnows ) and the temp im keeping them at 83 degrees , plus there is also 2 peacock bass in the tank .
the nitrates they are producing is about 20 ppm per day leading me to have to do water changes every other day . i can see how this could be a serious issue .

i have since turned the temp down to about 78 , and cut the feeding back . this is helping a good deal . i have to keep them in there current tank for maybe another month or so depending on just how large a tank i get the larger the longer it will take.

so i can see how nitrates could play a factor in just how long any fish can stay in a tank . the larger they are the more nitrates they would produce feeding and temp being a factor also. of coarse im already thinking of options to combat this problem too .
live plants maybe or some kind of continuous feed from a water line or something . not that i can see myself going this far (continuous water feed ) just to try and squeeze them in longer .
i would just build a pond . i might try plants though . for conversation sake does anybody have an idea just how much nitrates plants would be able to take up on a per day sorta rate ?
