Question For Flagtail Owners

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had mine with semi aggressive cichlids and it had no problems hanging with them. 1 per tank. Mine did figure out it could suck slimecoats off and went nuts over it. once they figure it out they won't stop. keep them away from fish with sensitive skin. I had a 5 inch ceylon puffer( the green one?) and it was almost killed.

I have also notice that they do chase silver scaled fish: silver dollars etc. The silver dollars never had any problems eluding him.

I've always had at least one flagtail in my tanks. They are the best tank cleaners, look awesome and do not **** as much as plecos.
My flagtail gets along with most of it's tank mates (aro, TFB, plecos, clown loaches, parrots & frontosas). They are a very low maintenance fish and not once have i seen it suck slime off any of the other fish.
My advice is to not chuck in two flagtails together, one will eventually kill the weaker one although i've seen a guy school around 10 flagtails in one tank and they seemed peaceful.
If I have one red Flagtail and one yellow flagtail, would they still try to kill each other?

Ditto about having a group in a huge tank, or just one. Otherwise they will bicker. I have had them as single fish, including with silver dollars and others, and never any sucking issues. Beautiful, gentle fish, always active, browsing about.
Your tank must be humongous, as the various fish you mention all get quite large. Otherwise, no bueno.
