I'm currently in the process of designing a fish room for myself and i know that I want a big centerpiece tank with a jardini in it. The tank would be custom made and either be 96x72x24 or 96x72x36 (inches). I want to get a complete idea of what I would want to/can keep and what size tanks needed.

*** No fish would be bought until appropriate sized tanks are already in place. ***

From what I have researched jardinis are hit or miss (mostly miss) with tankmates. I was interested in possibly keeping rays. Bottom dwellers would do better with arowanas, but was curious about people's experiences with actually keeping jardini with rays? Also, if I make it 36" high would it increase my chances of success being that there's more space between them? I know the size of the tank would easily keep a jardini with multiple rays but wasn't sure of the jardini aggression towards them.

With that said, do I even need the tank that wide then or would a 96x36x24 or 36 suffice?

Thank you.

It really depend on what you feed the jardini when their young. Feeding pellets reduce aggression as compare to feeding live fresh meat or frozen help them develop their natural warrior character. Tank mates for jardini is possible if the you introduce them at young age, just not too young to fit in his mouth. Introduce them only if the jardini is on pellets for 1 year or more.

I don't like to feed live foods as a main part of any fish's diet so I would definitely have it eating pellets as soon as possible (if it isn't already). I would want to get the jardini as small as possible so I can raise it up completely myself.

Also, thank you for the info! I'll definitely keep the 1 year minimum as a guideline.

DB junkie DB junkie keeps his jar with rays, but he also keeps it with more capable characins so the jar isn't the top dog.

I would think the height would help. As you know you'd want to stick to bottom dwellers most likely, if you go with anything else I'd say larger species of SD or something tougher than the jar but then you run the risk of that beating everything else up. You plan on a large tank so I think you'll be fine keeping a few other fish with it. As said feeding and how it's raised can influence its behavior. If I were you and had that size tank, personally I'd grow numerous fish that are said to be to aggressive to comm mostly up in it, might as well start them in it. I'd probably do the jar and try to locate a true salminus brassiliensis for top dwellers I'd probably get a few red hook SD to grow with them, maybe a brycon melanopterus, they're tough. And for bottom dwellers I'd do an aimara and wyckii. Maybe more wolffish like a curupira. That's just me personally. Few large fish I find attractive and a few dithers. If it were longer I'd try a lince catfish lol. I'd get all as small as possible except for the SD.

^ Lol.... Spitting image of my stock list right there......

I got my Jar already good sized, but was raised with rays and has shown no signs of being a threat to them...... I don't expect any issues with him......

Well being the cost of rays and the demand I think I'm going to bypass them.

I looked at the wolffish and am interested in that. The only problem is I don't know much about them. Basically I see people keeping arowanas with SDs, oscars and bichirs so much I want to do something different.

Anything is possible :) But I would try to build the biggest tank possible. The 8ft x 6ft x 3ft tank size will look wonderful. I mix all kind of fish together.

Whatever you're interested in share and we will give our opinions and advice.

With the wolf it can go either way. It depends on both fish individual personality. I think the wolf will have the upper hand. Not having personal experience with the cohab, I know DB junkie DB junkie has. He hasn't kept curupira I believe though if you're interested in how they play out. I'll give you my opinion on that going off of mine.

I feel my curu would keep a jar in its place and if the jar were to be relentless it would be killed if it isn't faster. I feel if the jar were aggressive and always looking for a fight they would surely occur as the curupira is active and hovers around a lot. I have an odoe for my top dweller along with a gold. My curu dislikes the odoe as she is the only one who fights back, she does so rarely, but she's faster so she gets away with it, however at night sometimes, I hear splashing and I've turned the lights on plenty of times to see the odoe running and the wolf at the top being the aggressor, I've seen him sit at the bottom and shoot up at her like a great white as well. He just doesn't like her and I'm fairly certain if he was able to catch her he'd kill her.she bites him more so than he gets her due to her speed, but her bites just cause the little grayish-white scrapes where as when he catches her it goes into the flesh and you can see the red flesh clearly. With my sun cat and gold, he went at them when they were first acquired and, with the gold atleast, they submitted and didn't fight back, he leaves them alone now after settling his dominance. And as for bichirs, he never took them as a threat, he literally protects them.

I have my jardini with rays and other fish. When i got it it was a known killer and all alone in the tank. I took the risk of bidding for it as its a black jardini. It killed a few tank mates in its first week. It didnt touch any of my rays but chases anything mid/top swimmers. After a few years it mellowed down and seems to lost its killer instict. I still have it and have synos, red devil, redhooks, and rays on the tank.
