Question for Pros

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One thing that should be mentioned is Discus do better in groups. 5 or more is usually recommended for a group.

I have heard of problems with discus and plecs sucking on them, I've had discus for 2 years now and never experienced problems IMO, always kept them together

Great Yanbbrox, I think I am going tomorrow night!!!! I'm not sure if I can take more than 2 in my tank though???? I'm so excited...don't know if I'm going to sleep tonight.

Did you end up getting them? I would love to see pics. I agree with the others, the more the merrier, but at least you are planning to get two. I have had to separate out one in a quarantine tank, and they get what I call "lonely discus syndrome."

The biggest risk of plecos sucking on your discus is if they aren't feeling good and are down towards the bottom. (no duh right...) Most of the time a happy discus will be in the mid to upper water column at the glass begging you for food unless they are picking food off the bottom. So I would just keep a watchful eye on them for the first few days and watch for marks on the side. When you first put them in they will very likely head for the bottom for a few hours.

Also, if you haven't purchased them yet, make sure they eat very well at the store. A discus that doesn't go after food is sick. Luckily the bigger ones tend to be hardier. Also, once you have discus you will want to make sure to quarantine any new fish you add (just in case you dont already). You may already know this stuff, but in case you didn't I thought I would mention it. Have fun, those sound like great fish for a great price.

Hello SoCal,

Thanks for the interest. Actually the lFS had only had them for a week so from the information I have gathered I thought I should wait before buying them. While waiting, I went to another LFS to see what they might have. Well this other LFS blew away the quality of fish where I had seen the first Discus. The second store is expecting some imported Discus on the 16 of March. They are suposed to be 5"-6" in diameter, and Blue @ about 55$ each. Now I don't know what to do. I have never been so nervous about buying fish before. I've looked at your gallery and may I say WOW!! I wish I was closer to you so that I could get some more advise. The guy at the LFS said he would not put them with Angels because they carry the same kind of diseases and etc. I really don't know what I am going to do.

.................:nilly:

To be honest with you, I've never really found healthy discus at the LFS, you should buy them online and pay the extra $50 for shipping - since the fish are already so much.

Just an opinion.
