Why do some of the florida gars I collect have 2 rows of teeth on the top jaw, and some have 1 row? Can they be possible hybrids? They look almost Identical to each other but some have 2 rows of teeth like alligator gars, when I know they are not alligator gars. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Wow that's interesting. I have never seen one with two rows of teeth on the top. Both my FL's have one row

how big are the fishes in question? specifically the ones with 2 rows and the ones with 1 row. if i'm not wrong, all gars have 2 rows of teeth in their upper (and lower?) jaws. it's just that this is far more apparent in Atractosteus Sp gars, hence the false belief that only gator gars have 2 rows of upper teeth.

eitherways, i would not diagnose a fish as a hybrid on the basis that they have a differing number of rows of teeth.

Solomon's away on a research trip, he may not reply for the next few days. I'm interested in hearing about this.

They vary. I have over a hundred instock right now. Since I have so many I think I will do a little experiment and count how many have 2 rows and how many have 1. I never thought off a difference until I noticed that some have 2 rows. I will post close up pics of the fishes jaws and teeth. As well as all the gar.

sounds great. although i doubt there's a difference, perhaps solomon will suggest otherwise. is it possible that you're just not noticing another row of teeth? it's not too hard to overlook especially if the fish are small.

hey xander, this is off topic, but i was reading some old threads from you. were you a newbie when you first started back in 07? if so youve def gained a lot of knowledge

These guys dont let you force their mouth open, lol. But I did manage to count 4 of them before I got tired of my fingers getting pinched in their teeth. All 4 of the ones I counted had 2 rows of teeth. When I have another person with me I will have some one photo the mouth while I hold the fish. I will take a pic of another fl gar tonight with only 1 row of teeth.
