QUESTION FOR SOLOMON :) OR ANY ONE WHO KNOWS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats an amazing gar my friend!!

and xander, when i was reading them i was wondering if it were the same person! but thats how i seem to be learning too. just sitting back and doing a lot of researching and observing my gars. its amazing the info on this site if you take the time to be inquisitive about it

hi All,

if this is indeed the same gar in all the photos (the first photo looks very different than the other two, but i would assume this has something to do with the angle of the photo), this is a regular FL gar...just a large specimen. to me it does not look anything like a Croc I, which is a gator x shortnose cross, not a FL x gator cross.

the second row of teeth (less prominent) is actually on the inside of the jaws, not the outside as xander was describing (the row he is talking about is not always considered a true row of teeth, and if it did count, then it would be a third row...go figure on more confusion).

again, Florida gar...just a big female; second less prominent row would be on the inside of the jaws and would not show from an external show (if you had a pic with the jaws open this would show...but this is tough to shoot and difficult to force (and may harm the gar).

great pics and specimen for sure!--

May I ask how you knew it was a female?
Is it because it's BIG and females are normally larger or was there a exterior trait that you noticed?
MAN, I wish there was a way to externally sex an Alligator Gar :(

What are some of the obvious physical differences between the OP's gar and the Croc pics that xander linked to? I'm still pretty inexperienced at IDing beyond the 7 main gar, so I am curious as to what I am missing, because those pictures look very similiar to me.
