Question for the experienced fish keeper.

As an adult, I've had fish off and on for 20+ years. I've never thought about it. If you like it, it can be very inexpensive yet rewarding hobby. One 30 gallon, a few small fish, some plants, a little creativity, and you can have a beautiful impressive tank. I've seen 50 gallon tanks that could stun anyone.

Enormous fish tanks with expensive fish and $10/lb food is at the other end of the spectrum. Making good economic choices in the planning stage is one thing. But if someone is thinking (too much) about the total cost, imo, then they should consider downsizing.

The WRONG thing to do while on a vacation is to have regrets over what you spent on the tickets. How can you enjoy it!?

Nice replies guys! I also want to know where to order the food online. I have a 75 gallon fully setup with air pump, sponge filter powerhead, emperor 400 and an emperor 280 on it and I plan on keeping my trimac in there for life. I have maybe 2 months worth of food from buying package deals on craigslist and I spent about $300 for everything. I'm just wondering now as a poor college student how to fit this into my budget. I don't need anything except absolute necessitites for this fish and I'm trying to get an idea of how much I will be spending on this fish over his life time with just the necessities. Of course there are emergencies and times when you want to just splurge out and spoil your beautiful prized fish that we possess. But just trying to look at estimates for budgeting purposes. Right now I'm struggling with transportation costs although I own a vehicle but I just can't afford to pay for gas and insurance and maintenance on the vehicle. So I've been riding the bus. At the moment I'm paying for school out of pocket until my financial aid kicks in so the last $1000 of my savings will go toward school tomorrow. I definately want to take good care of my fish so just wondering what people's fish budget is looking like.

Honestly dont want to know or think about it as im sure its a fair amount :)

The oldest fish i've had was a polleni that past away at 17yrs old... So considering inflation over the years etc... Hard to say...
