I don't think it matters, they are pretty hardy fish. As long as it's consistent it should be fine.

I add salt back to my water but that is because I use a percentage of RO water in all my tanks. The brand I use is Seachem "American Cichlid Salt" mixed to the proper amounts on the label.

Makes sense. I know the fish will probably do fine with no salt or proper amounts of aquarium salt. I'm just being ultra techy because I need to fixate on something apparently
 
Skip ( real hard cichlids ) has a male that is around 26" and 5-6 years old. Mel's big male was even younger than that. I think given the proper space, diet, and water conditions they should have no problem hitting 30". I've never seen one that big but also never seen one very old. We shall see I guess because I don't plan on getting rid of mine anytime soon so god permitting mine should be able to reach its full potential in his 11'x42.5"x38" tank.
