Hi,
I just bought a marbled gar from lfs, and was wondering how everyone feeds theirs. I have many community tanks, so I'm not a complete noob, but have just recently decided to go with a predator tank. I am not sure if i should be feeding him feeder fish everyday or once a week. I haven't been able to find a lot of information about this fish on the web and was just wondering what you guys have to say. Also what kind of tanks do they like. Right now he is only 5" and is in a 55 with one a lot of open water to swim in. Should i put a lot of driftwood in the tank or rocks. He will be going in a bigger tank when he gets bigger. Any addition information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Please take a pic, I've seen the marbled gar name on both pike characin/needlefish and also true gars. Either way the setup sounds OK until it gets to 10" or so. At that size you can feed it feeders to keep it chunky, but I would try feeding other foods too to start getting it off of feeders. Pieces of cut fish/shrimp, f/d krill etc.

should i feed it feeder fish everyday...i've been told to feed it everyday and once a week, I'm not sure of the amount that they should be fed. So far i've been feeding him everyday and he eats just fine. He usually gets the fish within 5 minutes

heres what i did with my gar, I gave it a few feeders one day then waited until it looked like it was hunting for more food and its stomach lost the bulge from the previous fish. that is when i gave it a few more and the process continued. this was about every three days or so. you can try this but keep a good eye on your fish if you see it looking around for food and its stomach is completely flat then give it some food. good luck

u have a florida gar. nice one too. put alot of feeders(that have previously been QT) in with him. at his size he needs feeders 24/7. he will likly max out around 24" so ull need a tank that is wider than that, I.E. much bigger than ur 55g. at his size the 55g is good at the moment.

we will be glad to help u in the gar forum. just do a search for florida gar first and ulll find a ton of info.

I bought three of these little gars. I think as someone else stated that the are true gars (florida). They are housed with a slightly larger Hujeta Rocket Gar. I put around a dozen QT'd rosey red minnows into the tank at a time. When the minnows are all gone (usually 1 to 2 days) I wait one full day and do it all over again. I might have to slow down though, because all four fish look like mini goodyear blimps!
