they should grow about an average of .5"/mo, so it just sounds like yours is growing fast.
do you powerfeed or do excessive WC? both of those things will allow them to grow faster. however power feeding is not healthy for them in the long run

don't really powerfeed. I feed once or twice a day, sometimes skipping a day. I'm always surprised at how fast he eats what I put in there, though. 30% waterchanges at least once a week. I hope he grows up awesome. I have a 9 year old RD that is in ailing health, she may soon need to be replaced. She keeps getting fungal infections and is totally listless. She's even getting HITH (uncommon in RDs?) I'm thinking about euthanizing her, as none of the other fish in that tank are displaying any kind of health problems (and she's nine years old and definitely not the fish she used to be).

can i pull off a jag and a red devil in a decent tank or is there a specific cichlid they do better with ?

I'd go with a dovii. You hear a lot of people saying doviis are the most agressive. But the dovii and jags have the same agression levels.

Yeah, same aggression levels. but doesn't the larger size make the dovii a worse candidate for tank mates? wouldn't the chance of a RD death be higher if its housed with a dovii than if its housed with a jag (in the same sized tank)?

HLLE (or hith as you called it) is common in cichlids. no need to euthanize it though, its treatable with care. the jag in my sig was a REALLY bad case, but i got him back to looking good with some tlc

My RD keeps getting this fungus all over its body. I treat it, and it seems fine. a week later, same thing. now the HLLE is kicking in at four distinct points. None of the other fish in the tank are displaying symptoms, so I don't think it could be environmental. I'm starting to think this nine year old fish is just getting old and Its impossible to keep her healthy.
