I purchased a rather large featherfish catfish yesterday...and when I got him home and released him from the bag, I noticed something very odd. His two pectoral fins look...odd. I will just post the photo. See where it's white? It looks like, for lack of better word, his bones are exposed! Both sides are like this as well as a small area on top of his dorsal spine.

I cannot see how he could have injured himself in the bag as it was a spacious bag, but he was in there for a few hours during the ride home...he is acting, swimming and eating fine. I have looked at dozens of photos of this fish and don't see anything like it though.

Any thoughts?

you would be correct. The only time i have seen the bone that clearly is when i was reassembling the remains of my different cats that have passed away. You can raise the temp and add some salt. Im not entire sure what will happen from here, a little bit of tissue may grow back. or the bone may break off.

Does the fish have movement in the pectorals?

Yes he can still move the fins and swims quite well. I will salt the tank and cross my fingers...he is very neat and I will be bummed to lose him :( no idea what happened to injure him...I don't recall the bag getting jostled much. Maybe he had a freak out incident and bumped into whatever the bag was leaning against in the car. Fins don't seem 'ripped' tho. I will get pic of the other side tomorrow...its not quite as bad but still looks pretty odd. The fins on that side seem still attached at least tho.

Poor guy :(

u sure he wasnt like that when you bought him? theres no way in hell he did that in the bag unless some flesh eating virus was in with him.

i agree, it has to be long term to have done that kind of damage!

wow this is a bit nutz there is no way for this to have happened in a bag without the bag getting punctured..... hmmmm

CONFUSION!!

I guess it could have and I didn't notice, as sometimes he holds it rather close to his body and it isn't as noticeable. THe gal at the fish store had to chase him out of a big log structure and she kind of shook it up and down to get him out and I don't recall seeing it then, but I didn't pay that much attention either as he was swimming around and she was catching him and after he was in the bag, he was triple-bagged so it was hard to see him (none of the bags got puctured).

If they had known about it I know they would have told me or not sold him so I guess I'm assuming something either happened when he was being netted (although you would think there would be blood or something??) or it was a long term injury and because he was hiding so much, no one noticed. He was in a 60 gallon tall tank with a lot of other very large cichlids/dempeys.

I hope he will be ok...Im debating if I should medicate or not. I have to post and show you guys the other side...it really is rather odd that both sides would be like that, don't you think? Otherwise he is very healthy looking and active, not what I would expect from a newly injured fish.

Cant open the pics. for some reason but I got a featherfin a couple years ago when I tried to put him in the tank he turned sideways and spread his fins and the fin poked through the bag. this peeled the skin back and exposed the bone. The bone was showing for a couple days and then the skin began to grow back and he was fine. I added a little aquarium salt to aid him along. I hope yours is ok.

how large was the log? perhaps with him hiding in the log, after a long while the sides would chew up his fins!!
