Question on PBass

Whats so appealing besides the color? Are they viscious, personable or what? My LFS said they are getting some in at around 1.5-2" and they will be $10 each.. they didn't know the scientific so I figured based on the size and price this board could probably tell me what they were so I could do a little more research on them.

I know they grow big but how big and how fast? I can stick them in my 150 gallon once they get bigger but not at that size as my O would have a tasty snack, how long could I use a 30 gallon as a growout? And how long would they live in a 150 for? I'd like to get 2 if it's reasonable.
 
Well there's alot of draw to them. Some of the reasons are the colors, eating habits,, and the fact with a huge tank you can have a huge community of large fish. But there are many reasons. That 30g won't last you but a couple months. As far as knowing what species by the price it's kinda hard to know from that.

I'll let someone else tell you how long the 150g will last and exactly how fast they grow as I haven't grown one to adulthood yet.
 
They are great fish. THey attain some very nice coloration, have tremendous personality and are quite the center of attention especially when full grown. No one is going to be able to tell you the Sp. by price and size. Most Cichla look very similar when at that size. THey are Most likely Monoc's ...but there are more than enough threads of mistaken identity to prove that even the lfs might not know. Get us Pics, and we'll get you an answer. As for tank size you could keep 2 in the 30 but they grow REALLY FAST. 150 will eventually serve as a nice growout too. I say 200 gallons up for life. I have seen a few setups of 150 and 180 with adults, but I honestly dont know how long they are kept there and honestly..kinda cruel...give them Space!
 
if you grow them out in a smaller tank, they wil grow out a lil slower, i think in the 30gal tank it might last you MAYBE 6 months because it'll be growing a tad slower then normal. the 150 would spurt them like weeds. if grown out in the 150, they could possibly reach 12" atleast by then. they average about 1" a month but slow down once they hit the 1ft mark or so. others will probably correct but this is what i've noticed about pbass myself. i'd keep a school of them if i had a huge huge tank but i dont. what else u got in the 150 besides the O? the pair might do well in the 150 for a while if the 150 isn't already well stocked.
 
Again never grown one out to real big size but from what I've been told by Nick, they should be 18"ish around 2 years? Nick can correct this later if it's wrong. I do know they grow about an inch a month for the first couple months, not sure if they slow down.

Also I've been told you can cut them back on feedings(not feeding daily) around 6" to get them to grow a little slower but why would you want to do that? lol

As far as what species. Could be monos, ocellaris, or tems. Which would all be farm bred probably. But there are people who score orinos at lfs' for cheap so there is a rare possibility you could get orinos but count on them being one of the others.
 
The 150 has a 13" Oscar, 8" Green Terror, 6" Jack Dempsy and 7" Featherfin Cat. It's the aquarium we keep in the showroom at my work.
 
Ok... The 30 will be fine for growing them to around 3-4" I've done that in the past with up to 6 in the 30 gallon! Just feed wee ones daily as they are very frail! Keep the temp up for them and add salt to the water. They will however out grow that 30 in about 3 months. So be ready with that 150! As stated above, they grow about an inch a month until around 10"...

You can have up to four (alone) in the 150 for probably 2 years... When they hit 6" just don't feed them as much, then you will keep them smaller and longer. I wouldn't keep any in there for life... it's just a little small.

The best thing as far as knowing the sp. is get some pics. We just can't tell from price. As Laz said they are probably Monos.

I actually have a question similar to this how many could i grow out in a 180 before they get to big? I wanted to put an arow bichir and a spotted gar as well all fish will be 1-3 inches
 
You could keep a couple in there for up to 2 years with those other fish.... all how much you feed them man! But make sure you feed them daily under 6"!

Here's a nice way to figure it out..... They grow an inch a month until around 10"-12" then they slow down... So thats up to 12" in a year. Figure they will grow at least half that in another year so thats 18" in two years... your 180 is how deep? 18"! So give them a bigger tank by then! :) If you feed everyday they will out grow that 180 in a year! I've seen 2 year old cichla in a aquarium that is over 20"!
