Hello everyone,

I have been reading up on the threads about making a diy k1 filter but my question is how much more effective would it be if I used k1 media in my existing g fx5's and fx6's. I'm currently using the fluval ceramic cylinders as bio media. Would k1 be superior and will it work fine inside the fx5 and fx6.?

As far as I know K1 is meant for a moving bed filter, not a canister. It is designed to be tumbling around to be most effective and I don't think it would do that in a canister. Here is a video of the one I made. It was pretty easy.

Spanky is correct. K1 is way too expensive to use in a static filtration system. I find that smashing an assload of pot scrubbers in a cannisters to be a very inexpensive bio media. No dead spots.

What kind of pot scrubbers?

Just cheap nylon scrubbers 6/$1 at Dollar General

I feel so. Eventually ceramic pores get clogged. Rinse scrubbers once a year, last forever.

another option is sponge media pieces from Angel plus. 4.75$ for a gallon bag. It's easy to clean and can be used in any type of filter.I use it in my sump for bio media.

I have a cascade 1200 which has multiple trays in it so I stuff them with Poly-fil and just throw it away and replace when needed. Just don't change out all the trays at once of course. Poly-fil is super cheap at Walmart and it works really well.
