Road trippin'
I have a shop that is pretty close by to where I am, and they have a "mated" pair of tiger oscars (that's what they have on the glass) that look nearly identical, are relatively calm in their 40 gallon holding tank at the shop, and are the color that I am looking for (solid orange on the body, with black trim all around them). These 2 are about 6-8" long, and they want $100 for the pair. I'm quite certain that this is a ridiculous amount, especially considering the size of them. I'm interested in picking them up, but there is no way I'm coming near $100. Would $60 be a reasonable offer? They seem to both be in great health, and my mother's boyfriend recently spent some money at the shop, so I'm hoping that gets me a bit of an in with the employees. On top of all this, they're moving down the street in the very near future, so I'm hoping that helps with my attempt.

I guess, ultimately, my question is what's a reasonable amount for them? I mean, I'd like to know if even $40 is a reasonable offer, considering, after all, they're just tiger oscars. And, I do have a SNEAKING suspicion that they were donated to the shop by a reluctant owner, or someone who lacked the needed space.

It all depends how much you want them, and a pic would help determine what there worth..

I doubt their health is optimal being housed in a tiny 40g tank at a lfs. Also, no way of guaranteeing a breeding pair unless you've seen these fish lay eggs and fertilize. Not to mention what's the point in a breeding pair of O anyhow? Their resale value of Oscar is practically nothing and you'll have a very hard time accommodating proper homes for all those juvenile O.

As far as the price, you are right there. 100$ is certainly a laughable price for 2 8" Oscar. I wouldn't even pay 40$. People give O away. The "breeding pair" claim doesn't add any value to them IMO since there is no money to be made in breeding O.

Oscars can produce up to 1500 fry. Even if you give them away at $1ea, that is more money than you can get for 2motoro pups. So I wouldn't call them worthless. Problem with breeding o's is they need a large tank (150g+) per pair and they tend to eat the eggs regularly. I doubt they are actually paired off at that size and it sounds like a scam.

I wouldn't pay $100 for an Oscar pair... but that's just me. I can just fish them out the nearest canal for less than $5 lol

I recently saw an 11" Oscar pair laying eggs in a 40 gal tank at the LFS, and they hatched a few days later :D

Oscars are way too common. If that was a pair of say black nasties or some kind of vieja pair I would consider it but I can get oscars for almost next to nothing around here. It is up to you as to how bad you want them but I would not pay more than $25 for the pair if they are even a true breeding pair.

Dont oscars have to be a couple years old in order to be able to breed?

It seems the assumption here, at least from some, is that I want to breed them, which isn't the case. I simply wanted a good looking, matching pair to display. While I understand your concern for their health, I've seen them 2-3 times in person, and compared to most fish store O's, they're healthy. They haven't been in the fish store tank for long, hence why I said that I believe they were donated. Also, the shop isn't close enough to me for me to get pics, so that isn't happening.

Looks like I'll go in offering like $40, but I'm going to assume I'll be laughed at. Not a huge loss, however, they can have fun moving 2 extra 8 inch fish if they want.

An 8" fish is not hard to move, and an Oscar at that; there one of the most hardiest Cichlid out there..

Ya know what, I'll take the high road and take back what I just said. Your response doesn't take into consideration what I actually meant, so feel free to exit my thread that way ------------>
