Question regarding Vieja compatability

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes it is - no such thing as a bad looking vieja. To my eyes, bifas, syns, fenes & hartwegi all look really similar. Bifas & syns have very similar colors & so do hartwegi & fene. All having the red heads & black patches on the body.

Vieja fenestratus is a good looking fish, more aggressive than syn, but not a terror. Mine 10 inch fene is the largest fish and policeman of the tank that breaks out fight.

So it seems that having females in the tank is a problem. What about growing out several types of Vieja and then removing the females? Is it possible to keep several males together without the presence of females to get them riled up?

They do fine with all if introduced right.Meaning._.You have a 180 long guessing just stay all same size 1.5 to 2 inch and make sure none grow faster than others more the aggressors.Like jags red devils midas some big pikes oscars, grow fast. Red tiger mota with vieja if male will be territorial aggressive or belligerent. Also slow grower when out ranked over time of other cichz getting bigger hides and proves its dominance by hunting live food its tricky getting them to eat in a community of aggressive fish.A 3 inch rd tiger will hold it down my male jag is 6 inch alredy ,was a half inch 3.5 month ago ,kingof my tank 225 gallon and my red tiger 3 will defend his, he could be swallowed but will demand hes a badas. Also vieja n bocourti r vegetarian mostly . But will eat like a carnivore ,which is bad ,there color darkens if not grey or blacks out from diet just doesnt get as pretty as could, plus vegetarian sorry herbivores have longer intestines takes longer for them to digest ,theyll always look bloated or fed if eat high protein food. There cool with other cichz but know what your getting into before one of us got to see a synspillum washed out on craigslist or a red tiger mota on his last leg from starving cause owner would feed right diet. Da best of luck, but ya 180 stock big bold n beautiful, bifasciatus ,syspillum, bocourti ,zonatus ,melanarus, mojara ,and fenestratus .The pleco sail fin, and could substitut some of other i named in for red terror loiseli ,polleni, green texas, king kong parrot , any way goodluck

Well my 8x4x3 has 8 dovii and 4 jags + a good 10 - 15 vieja 15-30cm in size. The dovii are a worry as theres 1 male who breeds with all 6 girls so it gets a bit crazy at times but no fish has ever been bashed to the point of death, sure I get some nipping here and there but thats about it, if I throw a new fish in the tank they tend to all gang up on it which is the only issue, I was able to add 2 x 20cm fenes last month though and still going fine also.

My black belts are the most placid in the tank and the zon is a bit of an aggro but when he has his little fits his put in place by the dovii so it all works :)

I think its just trail and error with these type of tanks, I was even able to keep my pearsi in the tank for 5-8 months without any major issues but they would get there fins nipped here and there which I do not like on pearsi!
