im sorry to ask this, makes me feel like a complete noob but what does it mean when a dat is called "stable." i think these fish are amazing and i would love to know more about them for the future. i figured id do my research now rather than later. add pics if you would like to show different kinds of dats too. i see a ton of them and i think they are amazing fish so help a guy out :p

Hahah I started the same thread with no response before. A stable dat will always show its color basically. A unstable dat will basically lose its stripes from time to time and look a lil pale. This is what I uderstand it to mean. I am sure a more experienced Dat owner could give you a better more complete answer. I can say this much, Dats are awesome fish. I have two NTT and they are great fish. lightning quick mouths

There has been debate over whether stability or unstability has anything to do with the fish's stress. Personally, the majority of my Dats are dark and have never shown any signs of stress.

oh ok that kinda makes sense now! i can see why people would want "stable" dats now. also whats the difference between dats like you said an NTT and i know there are many more. what do they stand for?

I bought 10 baby IT Dats about two years ago when there was a big influx of baby dats. People were buying 30 or 40 at a time thinking they would grow-out and sell them later I guess? I was on here a lot asking the same questions and getting: "The search feature works great" comments and so on. Never a straight answer, like it was just too much trouble to help a new guy out......
After that experience I promised my self I wouldn't be one of those guys. Here's some charts I downloaded to my desk top for quick reference:

Note: The ST is pretty much extinct. None in the wild and no one can figure out how to breed them in captivity. If you come across a ST it will be selling in the thousands of dollars.....

:iagree: I'd rather help inform people new to datnoids so they can get the proper information from people rather than have to search around for a little bit here and a little bit there and possibly be misinformed or find old information. To start I'll say I disagree with those who think an unstable datnoid is a stressed or unhappy one, my first datnoid is close to a year old now and from day one has been 100% stable and very rarely goes unstable at all, I got him/her at about 1.5" and he/she is now a little over 4.5". I think instability is most often used as a means of camouflage. When my other dats get startled and hide around their driftwood and rocks they turn a shade of brownish yellow and blend in very well to their surroundings. When I have a lot of face time with my dats or when it's time to feed they tend to shine bright gold/yellow colors. This leads me to believe that when they feel fully comfortable and secure they really brighten up and become "stable" and when they're startled, cautious, or unsure they become "unstable". This is all in my experience, I've kept around 15 ITs, 2 NTTs, 1 AT, and 1 NGT. I am by no means right because I've heard of dats that always stay stable no matter what and I myself even bought an IT who inhales pellets and is usually pretty active in my tank and used to me and he/she is always unstable (the brown unstable). Occasionally he/she stables up for a few moments when eating but it never lasts long. I myself like stable dats over unstable dats but I have them both and the mystery of why they change appearance so quickly and sometimes often is part of what makes me love these fish so much. I hope that helps you in some way.

Egon also posted the two best datnoid ID chart on the web imo, here's another I've modified to read english. I forgot who posted this where exactly and who translated, I'm not taking credit for doing this.

man guys thanks for helping me! thats the best answer ive gotten on any of my threads thus far. i know some dats get pretty big and i know they are pretty good community fish to some extent. whats the minimum tank size for dats? i know it depends on the other inhabitants, but just for a pair of dats?
