I've had some luck converting my big kel to smelt but that was when he was in with an Azul. They attacked the smelt after about a two week fast but now that I've sold the zul,the kel would go after them less and less.I now have a five inch kel that I have yet to try to convert.I have the two of them together and they are my only fish who eat live.......for now.

its real hard to convert i think unless they learn young. i trained my babys to eat pellets from small bc when they get to be 6-7" they have a mind of their own and know better.

Makes sense but when they are young and small it is good to let them fill out on fish and meaty foods.

how do you feed your cichla? are they waiting for you to throw food in and hitting it as it hits the water? I believe that is the "dmack method" and worked well for me when they were young. It might be hard though, I've seen very experienced cichla keepers fail at converting some of their kelberis. Good luck though!

Mine are starting to move to the surface when I feed them but they usually position themselves near the bottom.

thanks for the reply guys, they mostly wait for me at attention when its feeding time but these kels are proving to be the most stubborn cichla ive ever kept. ive never had this much trouble converting before, do you guys feel the same?
