So i have this bucket that i use to make waterchanges....then one of my parents used it and put soap or detergent in it......so my question is that is it safe to use still if i just rinse it or should i just use the home depot bucket that i bought yesterday?

bucket from yesterday

use the new bucket and inform everyone in your household that its for doing fish business and nothing else. if they need a 2nd bucket tell them to go buy another.#
if you share a bucket then a mistake will happen eventually, when not if.

So all i have to do is rinse the home depot bucket? It shouldnt have any chemicals or anything thats what im worried about:(

the new bucket should be fine. I have used home depot buckets myself. Label it with a black paint marker "for tank use only"

Myself, I would not use it again use the new one. I go to Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, or Dollar General Stores and buy cheap buckets for a few bucks and keep them away from everyone else.

home depot buckets are fine.. just wash the heck out of them like you do/should for anything that goes in or comes in contact with your tank.. and your best bet is to get two... keep one in your bedroom and the other with the tank stuff.. the one thats with the tank should always have "something" (book, rock, whatever) stacked on it so that you know if someone else used it..
a $3 bucket is easier to replace than a tank of fish

Don't risk it. Ive used home Depot buckets for years however like said above rinse them thoroughly.

this^^. always rinse a new bucket. its been sitting in a shop so it could probably do with a quick clean anyway.

yup. i lost my entire jaguar colony because of a similar mistake.
my brother wanted to do me a favor by doing WC on my tanks and ponds one friday (WC day)when i was staying late at work.
unfortunately, my dad used my WC bucket to wash/wax his bike, and the bucket wasnt cleaned out good.
i lost around 30 jaguars, and a ton of fry.
