you need to do it slowly, you cant just it up so much at once. I believe .002 is the most you should a day, I have no personal experience that is just what I have read.

it wasn't all at once, i've been uping it since i got them a little each week... i've had them over 2 months...very well could be something else, but the very next day after adding more salt one of them turned a brown color and won't get off the bottom of the tank...it's still alive but hasn't done very much since yesterday
They maybe too young for the transition. Check your water parm. including Specific Gravity. If every thing is fine then stop adding the salt and give them time to adjust. I got my two GSPs as juvies. I waited about 6 months before I started to add salt. I raised the SG slowly over the next year to I reached full marine. I don't know if that is the prefered method but it worked well for me with no problems. Remember puffers need perfect water parameters and nitrates should be no more than 30ppm. They are great fish with so much personality I hope everything works out for you.
In my opinion 55gal is a bit small for a grown up Oscar (and I don't think you want to keep him single). They can get easily to 13" and are not very calm.
