The Plec is a bottom dweller....if he's a common plec they're a huge bio-load and don't be surprised if he outgrows the 55 gal tank :-) You didn't say what size/species the cichlids were so it's kind of hard to tell if you've got room for any other fish.

I agree, depending on your current species and bioload add a bottom dweller of some sort.
 
the cichlids are african cichlids and i do have a normal pleco and he has grown about 2 in in 9 months or so. i was thinking i need a catfish to clean up the extra food that the fish dont eat so i dont to the fishy smell in my tank
 
No need to use a fish to clean up the leftovers. Just try feeding sparingly and vacuum leftovers.
 
Don't really NEED one per say...but like Lupin said, just feed sparingly. But if you really want one, a Raphael Cat might work or some type of Synodontis.
 
this should be in a dirrernet subject but i have a 20in bubble wand and my pleco floats up in the bubbles and then swims down with his back against the back of the tank and he keeps doing this all day long
