The Rex
does anyone know what it takes for koi to breed...i have about 14 koi in a 2000 galon outdoor pond and i was wondering if i should expect fry this spring....the Koi are about 14 inchs each...:headbang2

You asked 2 questions; In the spring, they WILL spawn. You are not likely to get fry unless you do something to save the eggs from parents.
Mine ( 4 in 1000 gal) pick a day ( actually starting at dawn) in spring and go pretty crazy, throwing some eggs out of the pond.It goes on for hours. They only do it once in the spring.
If you want to raise some ; the easiest is to remove floating plants that have eggs. Or add some fiber mat (like a door mat or carpet), they like to lay eggs against something like this.
I expect ther may be some info on the internet .

I know your pond is probably too big to do the entire bottom this way, but try using some typ of plastic grid in some parts for the eggs to fall into so the parents can't get to them. I can't think of the grid right now, maybe for lighting or something like that. Damn, i saw some a few days ago and thought about it for my friend's pond.

hope this might help if you can't find a way to get the eggs out. if I think of the grid or see it again, I'll let you know.
