Question about jags, why / when to they change their colors? who knows what about their attitudes?

Holey crap... Jags... They are heavily talked about here pretty much all of the time. Not a bad thing but the info has to overwhelming.

Jag attitudes suck. Mean as hell. They get huge too so you will need a huge home. Even bigger if you plan a community tank.

Color change-stress, breeding, anger, look at it cross eyed... LOL

Usually when you get them all set up and comfortable they get to a normal color and stay there.

^^^ I think he means when they get their adult patterns. Depends on if you get a male of female on both subjects, but males will be aggressive at an early age, and will probably start to show adult coloration at ~10"

well i have 2 of them have had them since they were babies 1 is about 8in other is about 6 they are in a community tank and they have stayed dark, change to the blackish color now they are all light and bright and you can see thier patterns so I was wondering what the color change signified

The pattern on mine has been similar since i got him at 3" long!

All jags seem to be different, mine changes colour with mood but i have no idea what affects his mood. The 'bars' are quite obvious in my avatar but other times he's all spots with no sign of them.

As for:
'Jags attitudes suck. Mean as hell.'
That seems to vary from each fish, but the majority to seem to be very aggressive. Mine's a big softy and goes against most of the Jag attitudes you'll read on here!

what tank mates are with them in the community tank.. for 6 and 8 inches your doing pretty good that they are not getting into any trouble.. if you post up a pic of them we can see how their pattern is ... male or female and whether they have most of the coloring they will have when mature..are you certain they are jags.. jags do not change color to this extent that i know of..

The larger they get, the more their pattern will spread out and look better. Males will develop an awesome purple sheen. If they're turning black, it sounds like they're stressed. What size tank are they in and are they getting picked on? And also how's the water quality? Are you keeping up with it?

they were black / dark mostly now they are bright with their color patterns i will take pics when i get off work of them being light now and post the pics of them dark as well

Jags are not outright aggresive fish, i've owned a few and they have only been territorial.

i'm raiseing a few right now and there all dark fish, they seem to get lighter coloration anywhere from 6-8"+.

I agree with XR, people just think jags are crazy agressive because they take up a large territory. If you give them space theyre alot calmer than most people would think.
