questions about Jags

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
meh, i've seen jags at about three inches showing mature patterns. what the owner did to do this i have no idea but oh well. one if the two i have is about five inches and just now starting to show less striping and more spotting the other is usually completely black and always pissed off so idk.

Mine has been black for a while. I used to have two, one male and one female. Then one day the male decided he could no longer live in captivity and went looking for greener pastures and only found my hardwood floor. Well after the female saw her hubby die on the floor she became real dark, almost pitch black to the point that you can not see her patterns. I thought that she was like that because she misses her man (which turned out to be right). A jag expert told me that jags, epecially females tend to be moody and if they are depressed or feel uncomfortable or if they get separated from a male that they have bonded with they will trun dark/black and sometimes when they are about to go into a growth spurt it can happen. He told me to try to make her more comfortable by giving her another male or rearrange the tank to see if it helps. I rearranged the tank and even though she is not normal yet, it does seem like she is trying to make a comeback.

what you decribed about the black is what was going on with my jags, I have arranged the tank now that there are more hiding spots / huge caves to accomdate their little territory they have claimed they have lightened up and can see their patterns,

they are in a tank with:
2 pikes 1 male 1 female
2 GTs 1 male 1 female
2 jags I believe 1 male 1 female
1 zebra
1 jewel
1 bristal nose
1 albino pleco in a 155 g now that they all have their own little homes in the tank they all get along for now till the new 155 g gets here to seperate some of them

Colors depend on the strain or individual fish. Not all will have that beautiful broken line pattern. Some begin to show the broken line pattern at 3". The horizontal bar will not be as evident. Only older and larger fish will display a mature pattern. Two nice race are the silver one, and the purple one.

see the weird thing about the silver strain is is that when i bought my jags that's what they were. they were 100% silver and black, it was friggin' awesome. i could even go take pictures of their old tank mates, they're not half the size of mine but they're still silver and black but the guy that got them for me even said they were rare silver jags and all i said was sweet, i didn't really care much cause i wanted another jag and i got two for ten bucks. so i was thinking like the photos i've seen they would grow to that awesome silver and black but nope, one is completely black, you can't even see the striping, and the other is black and purple with blue fins. but i'm not complaining ;)
