If it were just the price of the glass that was the issue in going bigger it would be one thing. Its also a good enligtenment trip to go check out the prices on stuff like heaters, filters, powerheads, lighting and even the price of decor. After what? Like anything for over 75 gallons the prices just get goofy on filters.

Another thing you might consider when you get a used tank is it may already have fish in it as well. You could fall in love with them or use them as a trade in for store credit.

KK, Think that about covers all my immediate questions. Nothing is set in stone, like I said moving out is in another year being optimistic about that, probably going to be closer to two years, maybe three even.

Nor have I decided to get a fish tank, I'm just exploring the possibility. Exploration is what I enjoy the absolute most. Used to enjoy a fish tank many many years ago, although certainly nothing like this :P.

Ended up losing interest in the fish tank because I had very little interest in the tropical fish at the time. Now having the legendary red death in your living room. That's just awesome :D.

That being said I'd like to thank EVERYONE who has replied, all your comments and patience in answering my noobie like questions have been extremely helpfull. This doesn't mean that I'm stopping here. I'll continue to research the species on the internet, talk to my LFS, convince mom that the red death won't break out of the tank and flop over into her bed, and just for fun push over the cat. (who by the way would not have any access any way shape or form to this potential tank).

Yeah, I would go for just about anything with that kind of time frame.

Completely off subject but I was going AWWWWWWW I WANT THEM when I found some for sale on craigs list after I got my tank is poison dart frogs. Those sound awesome too. Or archer fish, I haven't seen them in action but they do stay a lot smaller than piranha.

the other thing that may help on convincing your parents is to present the tank as a decorative piece instead of a glass cage to house your pet fish.
go through the media section and you'll find many members fish tank setup. find the ones you like and show to your parents.
IMO there's no furniture can compete with a nice decorated fish tank in the room.
what you are about to do is to bring a piece of nature into the house, nothing beats that.
also found these online which may help you convince your parents too.

Ram Cichlids are sooo much cooler. The red eyes, the mohawk, they'd go perfect with your mountain dew

I looked at getting those, the store i was at they were $20+ each and like an inch long. I think someone was on drugs when they priced them. And the mt dew was the brothers fault, he for some reason thought it would float. I think it was an excuse to get me to go diving to the bottom.

After this whole convict thing though I'm pretty sure I won't own another chichlid ever again.

yeah, they're 15 bucks each for about the same size here. I've noticed a recent explosion at a couple of the LFSs

Good luck! :)

Alright I may have found my tank! Searching around for a tank I found this great deal. 75 Gallons, he's only asking for around $80. However the plastic base is chipped around the edges, and on the corner of the tank there is a small chip. Below is a picture of the chip.

To me this chip doesn't look bad at all, looks like he just did it against a wall while moving it by accident. He's offering it so cheap because he just upgraded to a 110 gallon tank, and currently can't store the 75 gallon tank so just trying to get rid of it asap.

Take a look guys, would this chip stop you from buying this tank?
