Questions about putting sand in my tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also I hope it isnt to deep. 1 1/2 to 2 inch is ideal unless you have snails to keep the sand stired up. Other than that, I have been using sand / miracle grow with cap for 4 years now.

I have a really big siphon it's the 24 inch and I thoroughly vacuum through my sand and mix it every week that way. I use pool filter sand and when the sand gets half way up the siphon tube I just lift it up and it tumbles back down like the gravel did.

I love the sand so much I am converting my 175 bowfront also I removed half of the gravel yesterday and will remove the other half next week so it doesn't hopefully screw with my cycle. My tank runs 2 wet/dry systems tho so it has a really good bacteria load

With a tank that size are you going to pour the sand into the tank with water still in it??

i wouldnt change it all to sand at once, I just did a sand swap in my 20 which is obviously a little different, but i changed it over a third at a time so i didnt kill my biological filter. I also run a sponge filter with a ton of eheim bio media, so i saw no signs of the tank re-cycling.

Id do it maybe a quarter at a time and maybe even add a sponge filter if you dont have a lot of biomedia in your filter.
