When I first got my Rotkeil, I thought it was a male. Since posting some photos, some other MFKers have said female. Now, I come home from work to this. He/She was very busy today. So, is this a female making a place for eggs? He/She has been a lot more aggressive towards tankmates this evening. Also, I moved my green Sev.(who I think is female also) into another tank a few days ago. Could this have set things off for the Rotkeil?

Not unless my green is a male, which would be completely opposite of what I originally thought. The only other fish in the tank are an Eartheater, an EBJD, and a common Pleco.

It might be a male tbh, the males fan away the gravel with their tail to make a nest for babies. It all has to do with sexual maturity, if you see eggs then it's a female, that's the only 100% way to tell

It wasn't done with the tail, but by mouth. He would suck up some gravel and then swim to the front of the tank and spit it out. BTW, my Rotty is W.C. Would this make any difference?

I've had a pink Convict lay eggs without the presence of a male. It is possible, IME with my fish... the females usually start digging pits when they want to spawn. The male with them usually joins in after the first one.

For a rotkeil? Are you serious? :screwy:
Judging by the photo, what do you think I have? I can post more (better) photos if needed.

My female green severum laid a huge clutch with no male severum present. It was set off by my pair of german blue's spawning. It's possible. If theres no male the eggs won't survive, which I'm sure you already know. Lol. But yea, if she's digging maybe she wants to lay some eggs. I didn't even notice the eggs at all since I only noticed the GBR's cleaning off their spot. And the next day my severum and female ram were going at it like crazy and when I checked the severum's spot I found this

Also another way to tell if it's a female is if you can see like a "white tubing" sticking out between her pelvic fin and anal fin. And sometimes the worming on their face is a good indicator.
