Questions about sealing a plywood tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you glass it, then yeah its way over engineered.

If you use flexible sealant, then you are good to go.

How big will it be?

Indoors?

Had a look at your tank earlier. very nice.
A litre of marine epoxy over here costs between 130- 140 US$. So, if I had to use a gallon I might as well built the whole thing the traditional way. Tank's going to be 7*2*2. Plus the tanks in the fish house

I am starting work late tomorrow and will call into a couple of shops. Will be looking for food grade stuff. Is regular epoxy a lot cheaper than the marine stuff? It doesn't need to be saltwater resistant since I am only keeping freshwater fish

as far as i know, yes. I know that it feels very different after its cured. They are both brittle.

Salt will not eat away at the fiberglass, not for a long time anyway.

Finally got around to making a few phone calls. I was told that gel coat would not adhere to timber and that I would need to add a layer of polyester resin first. Sales talk or true?

I could not locate any food safe epoxy just standard SP106. Is that any good?

that is what i did....if you follow my thread you would see. But this is good in the sense that epoxy resin is alot cheper, and you only need a little gelcoat. I am not sure about gelcoat not adhering to plywood.

In my quest to keep costs down, I have come up with the idea to apply 4-5 coats of boat varnish or timber floor polyester sealer first and then cover with 2 layers of epoxy. I can get boat varnish and timber sealer for half nothing whereas 22 lbs of epoxy will costs me about 140€.
Another cheap option would be to seal the plywood with exterior varnish forst and than add two layers of epoxy.
Has anybody done that?
