I just got my wife a 6" Jag for her 94 gal tank this past Friday. It acts very shy and always stays hidden when we are around except for a quick trip around the tank.
1-How long did it take your Jag to become accustomed to its new home to the point where it wouldn't hide most of the time?

2-Are there any possible tankmates that we could get for it?

They would eventually(within the next year) be moved to a larger tank at least 125 gal but hopefully larger.

Give it a couple of weeks. As far as tank mates it's completely hit and miss. Some jags are mean as hell, others are very docile.

Give it a few days to a couple of weeks. Other Cichlids seems to work best...like Oscars, GT, and catfish too.

while its growing out maybe a smaller but aggressive species might work, like JD and salvini

:iagree: completely. I might add that some suitable tankmates may help to ease your jag out of it's shyness. You're probably just going to have to try some combos to see what works.

Tin foil barbs might bring him out a bit. I would try other cichlids. If you want to keep it simple, a couple of good size cons would work.

Give it some dithers like the gianto danios, it would ease that jag more and he might come out more chasing the dithers around. I think a 94 gallon is perfect and can do for life.

would a small school of tiger barbs work. I have 5 which are about 1.5"

they could be a meal at that size.i pretty much agree with all the posts. it could take a few weeks to open up. 2. tinfoil barbs or cons are the safest bet imo but alot of other fish "could" work depending on YOUR jags temperment. i have a salvini,gt,con, silver dollars, geo and a syn all half their size with my pair in a 125 and there have been no problems.but i consider my jags pretty docile.

its all trial and error. my jag tolerates his tankmates http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=153229 but would probably kill if there was just one other cichlid in the tank so if you add some more then id add 2 or 3 more cichlids. oppisite sex tend to put up with each other alot more so figure out what sex jag you have and id start with picking up a festae of the oppisite sex of the jag. i think a texas may work as well. be very nice if you could get 1 male jag 1 female festae and 1 texas. ive had 4 texas and still have 3 and they dont seem to mind being the submissive fish of the tank. other then that very nice tank and fish and good luck:)
