Questions re Tatauaia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got my tat at around the same size. It was a process with him. I first started by getting a hydor water circulator to increase current in tank and raised my temp to 82 degrees after about a week of not eating and within about a day he started following goldfish and started eating the next day.

After about a week he started eating frozen silversides and then frozen shrimp and turned his nose up to the silversides and eats nothing but shrimp now.

I then moved him into my 300 and he didn't eat for a couple weeks. Mainly catfish, loaches, and an eel in it. I then purchased a golden dorado to go into the 300 and they were almost instantly best friends. My tat has come out of his shell and even though the dorado is a seriously aggressive eater and even trys to get the food from the tat he seems to enjoy the competition. They are swimming side by side most the time or tail chasing each other ( not in a harmful way, just playful). I am not saying to go get a dorado, maybe I am just lucky, but I do think they do better with a little comrodary or at least a little competition.

yup, lights are off during the night. they do fine navigating around the tank in the dark. luckily mine has been taking pellets. I have a marineland doublebright LED fixture and use the night mode when I feed. It basically turns on a few blue LEDs and by now, im pretty sure my tat knows blue light = food dropping :)

as for tats that are still eating live food, no need for light.. i think they're naturally more awake during the night and is aware of their surroundings in the dark. i agree with ohiocatman that if you can, competition will help, but finding the right tankmate is the least bit easy. dorados usually do NOT get along with tats, they get way too aggressive. If you can afford a school of 3 tats, it'd be perfect :) no worries, if your water is good and there aren't bullying fish with the tat, it'll settle in eventually and eat.

Thanks guys. :) I think i'm gonna get another Tat in to accompany him. A 5" sells for about SGD70.00. Might add in another when my 280 is ready. At the moment its accompanied by a spotted gar thats about the same size. And a 2" silver dollar that i put in during the cycling of the tank. Water conditions should be ok i guess. temp around 82-83, ph is constantly between 6.6-7.0. Light is a 30" Aquasonic T8 single tube. Not sure if its the reddish light thats irritating it though. haha... But guess i'll give it more time and leave the Mollies in there. I have a spare wave maker, thinking of replacing the submersible with it. heh..

I didnt think that they can see the deep blue color like we do. Its sapost to repersent night time to them but we can still see them. so your kinda showing them that they eat at night witch can be a bad habbit when it comes to adding new fish, Theyll think its food and may kill it, and its a better looking show haha. I always had mine eat with the lights on to switch over a nacturnal fish to daytime. but its your fish and aslong as your happy with it then its a win :)

i have no idea, but w/o the blue lights, i'd be dropping pellets all over the floor in the dark :D i agree, i would love to see the action under full light, but for most tats, including mine, they would just freeze when i turn on the lights.

Lol.. I went and bought a small LED lamp with blue light function. The 2nd Tat will arrive in a few hours time. Hopefully it helps to settle the nerves of the first fella.

nice, i should have mentioned before you pulled the trigger on buying just one additional tat, they're just like any other schooling fish, getting along in groups of odd numbers. With two, keep an eye on both of them, especially if one is larger than the other. With three, the aggression of the dominant tat is spread between the other two instead focused on just one.. I noticed some lashing when I kept just two. Some others reported deaths... just be careful :) if you aren't looking to get a third and notice fighting, look into getting dithers like silver dollars.

good luck and keep us updated!

Hi Dammitkhoa,

The 2nd has arrived its from the same batch as the first one i got. The original one is just a little bigger by 1/2'' but they seem to be getting along side by side at the moment. The 3rd one will only come in when i get my 280 up and about which will take up to 3mths , not to mention the usual procedures with new tanks. I have a Silver dollar in there, but they are fin nippers when they get hungry though. hehe.. irritating buggers at times. I'll monitor and hopefully take a picture tomorrow.

my tats never had any problems but i would definately add some dither fish my two dont fight much since there are so many other simaler sized silver fish like silver dollars and barracudas but once they start eating get them onto silversides, massivore pellets or shrimp

Well i took some advise from the farm i bought them from and poured in a double dose of blackwater concentrate. And changed the lights to a 15" Led to shine in from the side. Both are mire relaxed, and do not run hiding at the first sight of ppl approaching
