What if I skip giving the plants a bleach bath? Could I maybe do something else? I wanna try getting the plants healthy by adding Flourish Excel and see if that helps.

the main cause of almost all algae is low levels of co2. you dont have to go all out and build or buy a co2 system, this could be as simple as dosing with Flourish Excel as this is a source of carbon for the plants.

im pretty sure youll see the algae go away if you start adding some carbon in there with Excel.

the thing is, that as long as you dont address the underlying issue (lack of co2), the algae is always gonna come back eventually

Hi, yeah I am gonna get some Flourish Excel today. My plants arent doing too well, plus some algae is forming. So I hope it helps. But will I always have to use Flourish Excel? What if I use it for a few months then quit, will the plants be fine and the algae eliminated?

Flourish Excel is a source of carbon. its an alternative to running a DIY or pressurized co2 system. therefore, no, you cant stop adding this or youre gonna run into the same problems.

all plants need co2 to grow, and some need more than others. some plants will not grow healthy w/o the addition of co2. your lighting also has to be up to par with the rest of the system. its really a delicate balance that you must maintain. and if you dont keep this balance, the algae will be there soon enough to let you know!

if youre really interested in learning about the planted tank system, check out this site. there are tons of no-nonsense articles that get straight to the point. this guy is awesome. i printed out all of the topics on the right, and read them twice. then when i thought i understood, i read them another three times ;)
