hey guys, me and my brother will be stocking our new 240. thinking of making it a CA/SA cichlid community. got some questions on compatibility. please help.

before specific questions, here's what I already have:

texas x 1 @ 4.5 inches
firemouth x 4 @ 3-4 inches
cuban x 2 @ 3 inches
red devil x 1 @ 3.5 inches (not sure of this guy)
jaguars x 2 @ 1.5 inches (growing out)

here's what we're thinking of adding:

GT
convicts
salvins
oscars

here's what we need to know :

1. should we add the RD to the above mix ?

2. is the stocking list possible ?

3. which of the above fish be introduced first and which one the last ?

4. how many can be kept of each like in case of oscars more is better for distribution of aggression, does it work the same way for RDs / jags ?

5. any other suggestion ??

thanks.

"4. how many can be kept of each like in case of oscars more is better for distribution of aggression, does it work the same way for RDs / jags ?"

what I mean is whether an overstocked tank (as is the case with africans) equals reduced / distributed aggression in case of CA/SA cichlids ?

Ive personally never had luck stocking all of these types together. However I have never had a 240g tank either... Try to see. Make sure theres plenty of hidding spots and personal enclosures available for each.
Nutty is a great person to get an opinion from. He has quite a few aggressives together and has no issues. Hopefully soemone else will chime in.

Will work fine for a while, everythings still small and has lots of space, once the fish become adults you may have problems or you may not, theres no way to be sure, what may work for one person may not work for the other, all you can do is try it, once agression from a certain fish gets out of hand then remove it.

Intersting project. I have a 180 gallon with red terrors(6), a jag, a black nasty, jack dempsey(2) all less than 3" and they are doing fine. I have done this twice before including cubans and carpintis and they did fine. It all ends once the fish hit 5-6". Overstocked helps distribut the beatings better but it never solved the problems for me. My cubans took over!

For your set up, My guess is the fire mouths salvins and oscars will tap out first.
good luck
the rd's will fit in fine

my rd gets along fine with Oscar and two black belts..all about 10 inches.. the green terror i had to move .. being picked on..

He's got paratheraps/vieja species, and my understanding was that those aren't excessively aggressive like other big new world cichlids.
