maybe i am overreacting but I just cracked a thermometer inside the tank... I watch the little metal balls and liquid go into the tank... Is this harmful/fatal? Do I need to do something particular?

You're fine, when I had cichlids they would sometimes break them. Do a water change just in case.

no need to do Wc, as long as the mercury don't break, then you have nothing to worry about. I'd suck up as much as the metal balls as possible to eliminate to risk of your digesting it.

Seeing how liquid went into the tank, it's a good idea to do a WC. If it does happen to be something harmful, it will be too diluted to effect the fish.

Yep, vacuum and W/C's.

Oh yea, don't eat the fish :D (sorry, couldn't help myself)
