quick question about cleaning out filters

I vacuum it up once a week, it doesn't make my ammonia or nitrates high or anything, I just don't like the like of it on the white sand, it gives the tank a dirty appereance so what I've been doing is just stirring it up once a day when I'm done feeding. The clown loaches + tinfoil barbs end up eating most of it before the filter can get to it:nilly:
