well i just picked one up today. wasn't in the tank more then 5 mins and already chasing around feeder rosy's. this guy is awesome. he hangs out with my silver aro like there best friends. i love how he looks like a salt water cuda or something. i've never owned a fish that looks like this.

anyway, the quick question which has probably been asked before but im gettin miss information about it. i jus want a straight forward answer.

the hujeta gar, labled to reach 24" in the wild but closer to 12" in captive. how long does it usually take to reach 12" ? why does it not reach its full capacity of 24" in captive? is there anything i can do to help it reach its full possible length? and how fat around will it get at full size?

anyone got any pics of 12" hujetas? i never seen any above 6"

oh yay... you've answered the most obvious but none of my questions. anyone else who knows more about it rather then the name that can possibly answer any of my questions. thanks

My point is this thread shouldn't be in the gars section, it should be in "other monster fish".

Your fish is not a gar, so why post it in gars? :D

The reason it doesn't reach that size in captivity is the same as almost no other fish reach their wild size, a variety of factors that nobody can really say for sure.

Varied diet, right temperature change, the right water quality, being in a school, having an infinite amount of space compared to the confines of an aquarium etc

I've seen a couple of pics of a beefy foot long hujeta, pretty cool. The biggest one I've had was about 8 inches. Not a bad predator, but a bit skittish, and nowhere near as cool as the true freshwater cudas - the acestrorhynchus species.

BTW I am not sure how accurate that 2 foot wild size is, I've never seen a wild hujeta that big.

i have never seen a hujeta 12" long and i have one about 7" and i got it like a year ago and he still has grown only about like 2" so i dont know about others but mine grows rather slow but yes they are cool fish mine is very fat and rumblesushi it is a characin

sweet, thanks guys. sorry for putting it in the wrong section but i've seen it labled "hujeta gar" at the store and a few searches on google said the same. i know it has many other weird names but i was jus tryin to get a quick insight on it.

so a slight average of about 2" a year. i want a real gar but this guy will do til i find one.

Yeah they are called slant nose gar even in England, it's annoying, not only is it not a gar, not related to a gar, but I don't even think it looks anything like a gar.

If you have a big enough tank, get a true gar, they are superb.

i plan to get a spotted gar, at about the size of 6 inches, he'll be in a 150gal for the first few months of his life while im building a 800-1000gal tank in the garage for all the species to end up in. can't wait

That should be fine. To be honest the spotted gar would be good in that tank for a couple of years, if the tank is 24" wide.
