Quick Question

This pipe you see in the back corner is in my overflow and from what I understand is the pipe that sends the water from the overflow into the sump below.

I'm new to all this and was wondering before I fill it how I would prime the u joint in the pvc or is there a pump in the sump that should be pulling water?

I just don't want to start up the sump system and have the pump pull all the water out of the sump without having the overflow refilling the sump... nobody likes an overflown tank onto the floor...

Also, anyone know what that little switch is just above the U-Joint?

there should be a pump pumping water from the sump into the tank so as the pump fills the tank higher the water over flows into the pipe down into the sump and the cycle repeats.
and should ask the person you bought it from about the switch and everything else, just to make sure you do it right.

There is a pump sending water back into the aquarium.

Wouldn't the pipe not fill up in the way it is positioned because of air within the pipe? Or would it not have that effect?

And I can't ask these questions because the guy who sold it to me sold it because a guy left it is his rental house. The sump is nice and has everything... I guess the only way to figure it out may be to fill it up and give it a try... any more recommendations or opinions are welcome though.

Found a diagram online to show what's going on with my tank from my perspective...

So what I am basically asking is I know there is a pump to return the water, but is a pump needed to drain it out of the overflow?

Well, the website I found that at just answered my question... it's a reef ready type overflow and no priming is needed for the drain...

It'll be up and running for sure Saturday... won't be complete til my Protein Skimmer and extra Powerhead make it in sometime next week though.

Do you think a 1050 GPH Koralia Powerhead is good for a 75?

ummm im going to have to say...i have no idea, lol more of a fresh water guy
but im sure it should say it online where they sell it how many gallons its good for or how much coral

If you are going reef then I would get multiple powerheads but yes this is a good size to start with.

For now this is a FOWLR setup, but I'm only stocking fish that are reef safe because eventually I'll buy the lighting a reef deserves prior to starting a reef.

Need to get a foothold before I dive in.

And pics will definitely be posted when it is completed.
