Quick Question

NO!

You have an SUV. Rent a uhaul trailer and be safe. You're risking a very large financial loss by strapping it to the top of the tank, not to mention the potential liability of causing injury or damage to other people or their property. Please, for the love of fish, don't do it.

So what's the weight of an empty eight footer....glass and acrylic?

I did a quick search and the largest weight info for an empty tank I could find was for a 180 gallon72x24x25 empty weighing in at 338 pounds. So I imagining a 8 foot tank would be heavier than that, by how much I'm not sure. Unfortunately I can't even render a guess as glass thickness increase as gallon capacity does and I don't know what equation they use to figure out how thick glass should be on an aquarium.

I strapped a 90 gallon to the roof of my hyundai accent before. 4 hour drive, no problems at all.

Model not mentioned as stated before. I transported my 180 in the back of my old denali with all seats folded flat. The possibility of a nasty possibly fatal accident is very high with something that heavy AND tall strapped to an already high top heavy vehicle.....glad you got the uhaul. Safety first
