ok so iv recently moved into city limits and so this will be the first time i will be setting up my 125g with city water instead of well water. iv never had a tank this big when iv had city water so wanted to know how those of you with city water dechlorinated and buffered your water? do you hold water in big container (like a trash can) and add chemicals then pump it into tank or do you just add the dechlorinator to tank and then add water straight from tap? also what do those of you who have amazonian fish use to keep the water at the lower pH that these fish need (looking to keep it around 6.5 will have to go test it to see what it is straight from tap here)

I fill up a garbage can with tap water proper temp using a python then add prime. Then I siphon out the water and clean the gravel with the python. Then use an old powerhead setup in the trash can to pump the water that has had a good 20 minutes dwell time with the dechlor in to the tank. I used to just pump in tap water but got a little paranoid about it and switched to this method.

You should be fine adding prime and refilling however if you use a python or other water change system other than buckets. I am a bit over cautious ive been told.

i just add the water straight to my tank, with de-chlor. las vegas has pretty hard water, but my house has a water softener, so it isnt so bad. ive had no problems what so ever.

I just add it straight from the tap with a python.Add enough dechlor to treat the whole tank as you are re-fillling.

ok great thanks guys for your advice im wanting to avoid having to have a big trash can taking up space so will just put the dechlor in before adding the water and will be doing it through buckets so should be slow enough add for the dechlor to work, what brands do you guys use iv heard good things about prime is that what everyone else uses? and what do you use to keep the pH low?

well ones that would need the softer water would be sevs, BGK and bichir will also be keeping an oscar and pink-tail chalceus which would be fine in normal pH but from what i was reading the others would do better in a softer, lower pH water
