I use eggcrate tied together with zip ties, and always put some horizontal pieces on the bottom for stability, I put rocks on them in large, strong fish situations.

I also leave enough to protrude above the water, and notch out a piece for the tank rim, adds even more stability to fit it snuggly in the rim.
