I am planning on upgrading the fish in my bedroom, and I am wondering what my filter choices would be. Normally I use sponge filters, but the air pump humming would keep me awake. I was using an aquaclear, but they do make a crackling sound that already drives me crazy. I was thinking canister, but the cost is prohibitive.

Also, I hope on having a sand substrate. Any ideas?

Eheim Classic Series canisters are dead quiet. They aren't cheap, but they will outlast most filters several times over.

my eheim ecco filter is absolutely quiet as well. try going to the marketplace and seeing if someone is selling what you're looking for for a good deal :) that's what I did!

x2 on the emperor 400, i have two on my 2g, they run quite, just make sure no sand gets in the impeller or there will be a grinder noise, kinda annoying but it will go away with proper cleaning. They run for $60 at my PetSmart.

FX5 or Eheim Classic. I'm a sole believer of "what you pay is what you get".
You won't be disappointed in forking out extra $ just to get those branded canister.

Eheim classic canister without a doubt

what about a sump right now mine is a little loud but if u start from scratch its cheap , easy, and the best filtration you can get , just make it beneamial
