I have an Eheim 2217, rena XP3 and AC 110. Out of all of them the eheim is the quietest, then the xp3, then the AC110. Any HOB is going to be loud compared to a canister filter though IMO unless you modify the output of the HOB somehow. Some people put sponges by the outflow to quiet the waterfall type noise of AC 110 or they raise the water level really high, but I can't do tht bc I have fish that might jump out like aros and bichirs.
You should get some kind of canister filter (a reliable one like 2217, xp3 or even FX5 if you have the money.) I have a stand with doors and I can't hear my filters at all with the doors closed. With a hang on back filter though, you'll probably always hear the water splashing sound of the output or the filter motor sound. That's why I'm trying to use all canister filters in my tank.
i may upgrade since i will have to anyway when i get a 110g. it all depends on the prices and reliability, i want the most effecient thing for the least amount of money.(thats what we all want) ha ha if i went HOB i would go aquaclear for the lifetime warranty or aqueon for the quietness. canisters work better anyway, so do submersible filters.
