I have a custom pond filter on my predator tank, it has tons of media and I have been driving it for about 5 years with a 650gph pump i got from home depot. I am considering getting another pump that moves more water. its not rattling but is starting to vibrate some. it looks like a mag style pump. It's fairly quite and is not submerged. My parameters are in check but my bass is growing this is more of a preemptive change.

The pumps I am looking at are a quiet one 4000 which is 1017gph un-restricted, and 5psi max head height is 10ft. 50watts.

I also have seen this pump which is probable overkill but in initial setup is less. Its only 650gph but has a max head height of 98 feet and 43psi, which should help out when blowing through 2.5 gallons of media. Can anyone calculate power usage on this pump? Should I bother to try this pump i have held it in my hand and its bigger then most hot tub pumps.

does anyone have experience with either pump, the quiet one will be easier to setup but I honestly do not know if its a true improvement for water circulation. I know fx5 unloaded are 950gph and then cut down to about 600 loaded, eheim has a big capacity filter as well with 2.3 gallons of media and 450gph(i am sure unloaded) they rate for 250gallon tanks.

thanks opinions are welcome.

If harbor freights pumps are anything like their tools dont do it. Most of their stuff is best for specialty tools that you will use once and dont want to waste money on quality.

Get a pump designed for your use. The HF pump is not designed to run 24/7 for years. It will also draw more power probably. I own lots of HF products, but they are really designed for occasional use for projects that are not critical.

thanks guys quite one it is, I calculated power usage and yes the harbor freight is a power suck.

last months bill was 400.00 not something I need to increase.

The Harbor Freight pump will draw ~600 watts (Volts X Amps = Watts, so 120 X 5 = 600); if you pay the national average for electricity ($0.11 per KWHr), it'll run you about $48 per month.

The Quiet One 4000 at 50 watts would only cost about $4 per month assuming you pay the national average.

About 15 years ago I used that exact Harbor Freight pump to boil all my fish! I thought, more GPH for a lower price... great!!!! The motor is so inefficient that it put off a tremendous amount of heat which migrates through the impeller shaft right into your tank water. That thing is so crudely made that you will probably get less GPH than the QuietOne4000. Since it is a directly coupled pump it will probably spring a leak around the impeller shaft in less than a year. Mine didn't even make it a year before it froze after I re-purposed it as a parts washer pump.

You would have a very difficult time finding a lower quality pump than that Harbor Freight pump! Just send me $45 instead of spending it on that pump and you will be much better off!
