Quietest filtration for a 550?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If the sump's waterline is the same as the tank's, you don't need any overflows, you'll be able to plumb them together directly, and it shouldn't be any louder than a canister. I guess you'd have a hard time squeezing one in with the available space, though.

C Chicxulub check out my 600 setup. NEW MONSTER : Another Monster Journey : Setting Up Monster 600 Gallon I really love my bead filter setup. the only "sound" coming out is the pump. and cleaning is a breeze... just back wash the filter.

Li I REALLY like how you have that set up. I'm probably going to be copying this pretty directly. I may even stick the filters outside to ease both backflowing them and to reduce noise. Hell, I could probably even put the pumps outside. I like this a lot!

that will be even better!

I think the plan for the time being as as follows:

1- goal of 10k gph through the tank, left to right, possibly augmented by powerheads.

2- Gravity drain from the right side of the tank through the wall of the house into a stock tank outside.

3- Drip system and ro/di filling said stock tank

4- 2 or 3 large pumps drawing water from the stock tank and pushing through the filters (Wlim glass bead filter and Ultima 6000 a la neoprodigy neoprodigy ) then into the tank through three returns that will provide even and laminar flow across the entirety of the water column.

The only potential problem with this that I can see is the heat that could happen here in the deep South. I may be forced to skip the stock tank because I can't imagine the filters becoming hot enough to become a problem if they're shaded. The stock tank on the other hand could be.

Got the rudiments of a plan going, I like it

I’ve built 4K flow on tanks you couldn’t tell were running standing in front of them. It’s possible but takes careful planning. The overflow design (herbie, bean animal, hybrid etc), keeping the overflow lines submerged as they go to the sump, foam in the stand and a rubber mat under the pump make for a silent setup that is fairly “scale able”.

None of which are more costly or hard to do, just require planning.

This right here.

It would be much easier to plumb the drains using one if these methods than to start busting up walls lol.

Noise was a big concern with my 300. I went with a herbie set up only because it made sense to me. But like jk mentioned any method would work.

The main aspect is to remove air from the main drain with a valve (i used a gate valve, was easier to fine tune) they system is dead quiet. I have an ac110 on another tank and is way noisier. You can move a ton of water by eliminating the air from the lines (full siphon)
I actually just made a vid for a friend on here who is considering it. I can pm it to you if you want.

Some of the dc pumps out there are really quiet as well and are energy efficient

Absolutely! Please send it over :)

There's no busting of walls though, this is an as yet unbuilt brand new house in which I plan to live the next 50 years or so. Everything can be built in properly from the start. I'm going to sit down with the builder next week to discuss adding a little room behind the tank to house all of the filtration stuff.

So, if that pans out, I expect that I'll combine the quiet overflows with the stock tank setup in the little room behind the tank. Best of both worlds :)

Simple....closed loop system with a couple of bead filters.
Or ultimas I think are the popular ones over there, albeit expensive.
Here in uk, lots use cheap koi bead filters with k1 inside instead of the beads.
So long as return isn't slashing then pretty much silent set up.
