Could've been either fish. I had a 2" super-red longfin Ancistrus get eaten by a (at the time) 3.5" asian bumblebee cat, this species does not have a very large mouth either.
 
The green phantoms that you're thinking about are like the blue phantom that I have. I've read and talked to the lfs where I got mine and understand they will grow fairly slow. Unless you plan to provide some coverage or get a larger phantom, you may end up with the same result. My two plecos are about 3" and are relatively "safe" while the Lei is only about 4.5-5". I'm keeping an eye on things and hoping they grow to a decent size compared to the aro.

They do tend to hang out under the large drifwoods that I have though and are just ignored now...
