we have a barn cat... shes been to the ER vet more then once because of racoons.. but she did do a good job of running them off. need a cat that aint afraid of nothing... or a yappy terrier... usually once they win one fight with the coons they stay away.. racoons are not dumb.. what is dumb is underestimateing them.

I wouldn't want any of my pets to get into a fight with any racoons due to the disease that they may carry.A good sized dog should easily make short work of a coon but one bite from one and it could get infected with something nasty..They used to come up on my porch and never bothered my cat.He would just sit there looking at them as they rambled about.
good thing you don't have them..brooms break easy, and knives are too close. maybe shovels and pitchforks.

They have killed cats around here. We are surrounded by open country, & they only come around houses at night. The ones in our garage showed aggression towards me trying to scare them off.
My friends' neighbor kids were all traumatized to see find their cat tore up, gutted and hanging up in the yard tree. Raccoons had been hanging out up there.
My barn cat has enough sense to avoid predators, so far.
I wouldn't let my dogs chase or get to them at all. It would take tough and coon-savvy dogs..best more than one. I'd worry about their eyes getting injured too.

With poison, you just have to make sure that only the raccoons can get it.
Yeah,during that period we kept our cat inside(my house sits on a large yard)and put the hot dogs out near the pond late in the night.
