Well, I'm moving down to Mississippi and since they get A LOT of rain down there I fingered I would try using rain water for my tankz. Never done it before, faithfully anyway. I've used rainwater a couple of times while i was in Nebraska and the fish seemed to love it. She lives in the country, so pollution won't be as big of a problem. I'm hoping that if i use it it will lower the pH of the water, which would be idea for my SA fishies. I would have a couple of 30gal barrels with funnels on them around the yard to collect, or just under a water spout would probably work best. The water would be aged, maybe put some peat in with it, not sure yet. Any suggestions? Thankz! Cheers,
Jer

Interesting. I guess i would have assumed it would be too polluted to use. But you say you've used it before huh?

There is going to be a lot of bugs floating in it for sure :D And with the peat in there, it could be harvesting mosquitos and other insect larvae. Not that its bad for fish.

Hmm. Let us know how it goes.

I would only try it in the country ... here in Taipei it would mean instant death to the fish with all the pollution

If you're planning on staying there for a while, why don't you invest in some guttering (collects water from the roof) and a water tank (holds the water). This way you won't have to worry about getting anything in the water while you're collecting it, and you'll also get a much larger volume of water.

If you wanted to get really organised system, you could run a trickle system straight from a tank collecting water from the roof, but above the height of your tanks ... it wouldn't even need power!

Just my 2c... :D

Rain water is generally very soft and a bit acid, in most places it is not safe fresh as it is to lacking in minerals.

dont do it you dont know what in it if you ever heard of acid rain??? well all rain has something in it

:iagree:
The only time I would recommend using rain water is if your trying to breed angle fish. But other then that I would have to agree with rottbo it’s more acidy then what you think…

orrrrrr, you can pass right over Mississippi and move to the east coast altogether

I know a lot of people over here do it.

But I agree with the acid rain part.

Hopefully there is not a lot of pollution...

The acidic water and low pH would be PERFECT for my fish, which is why i wanna try it. I know of several people that have conditioned their dwarf pike cichlids into breeding by using rain water, but they are from Ohio i think. I would age the water, put some conditioners in it, possibly some peat...dunno for sure. But the lower the pH and the more acidic/soft the water is, the better. I know someone else that managed to get their pH down to almost 5.2...lol...and their pikes LOVE it!

that will leave Jen and I as the mfk nebraskans. have'nt seen here much anymore. I have tried it, but could never keep the water clean
