does anyone know where i can get some cheap rainbow darters and sticklebacks?and could someone give me some info on keeping and breeding them?

Sticklebacks can be a pain, as they will attack each other and other fish. I collect Brook Sticklebacks locally, but usually throw them back.

is there anything special i need to do to get them to breed? and can they be bred in a 20???

Rainbow darters and stickleback are very different fish. The darters prefers fairly strong current and are found in riffles of small to medium creeks and rivers. The sticklebacks prefer more sluggish conditons. They are generally found in backwaters and swamps among vegetation.

They will likely both breed in a twenty gallon, but not if kept together. They require totally different conditions. The rainbows will deposit their eggs in the gravel and depend on the current to aerate them. The sticklebacks create an elaborate nest by cementing pieces if debris and plants together. They need to have vegeation in order to spawn.

thnx. i also have a 50 gal that im going to put bluegills in and was wondering if the bluegills would bother sticklebacks, dont bluegills and stickles have the same conditions?

Bluegills and sticklebacks are sometimes found in the same habitat. Ths only works because there is adequate cover for them in the wild. This will not work in the aquarium. Once the bluegill gets any size, they will immediately eat any and all sticklebacks.

oh ok just wondering.

IME, sticklebacks should not be kept with any other fish. I am keeping about 10 in a 20 gallon. They are pretty decent with one another when there is an established pecking order, For instance I would stock the tank all at once. Any additional sticklebacks added at a later date are usually nipped to near death. Same would go for any other small fish added to a stickleback "colony". They are very interesting little fish, but they are really fiesty.

Sometimes I collect 3 spine and 9 spine sticklebacks from landlocked populations. I didn't have much time this year so I don't have any now. Contact skipjack. I'm sure he will want to make 20 bucks from you.
